The First Principles Series

Quote 1Unfortunately, much of the teaching in modern Christianity is hit-and-miss. It includes sermons, books, and Bible studies that are often not well-connected in a way that helps Christians become “firmly rooted” (Colossians 2:6) in the faith.

The First Principles Series is a set of 13, six-session Bible study guides for use with small groups. The series was written by Jeff Reed, President of BILD International. Rather than the typical fill-in-the-blank approach, the series employs a highly effective study method using readings, personal reflection, group interaction, and projects. The First Principles Series systematically teaches core principles leading the participants in firmly establishing their faith and on to deeper commitment.

The First Principles Series is built around Paul’s idea of “the elementary principles” (see Colossians 2:8 andHebrews 5:11-14). These “elementary” or first principles, represent the first things that should be learned by a new disciple—a foundation upon which everything else is built. So, even for those who have been Christians for a long time, this series will help fill in the gaps that are left by our hit-and-miss approach.

Quote 2In the early church, before new believers were accepted into the church, they needed to learn the Didache (Greek word for “the teaching”; referring to the teaching of the Apostles). The First Principles Series teaches the same truths in a sound and practical manner, establishing a solid foundation upon which a mature life in Christ can be built.

An overview:

Series One

The first principles of the faith, community life, community purpose and disciplined living. This series lays a solid foundation for new believers and a more complete foundation for all believers. Therefore, it serves as an excellent tool for leaders to use in helping others become established in the faith.

Series Two

The first principles of marriage, family life, ministry and true success (making our lives count for eternity). This series builds on the foundation of Series One, helping build strong families—the backbone of strong churches.

Series Three

The first principles of Bible study through the study of Acts, 1 and 2 Thessalonians, Ephesians and the Pastoral Epistles (1 and 2 Timothy and Titus). This series builds on the foundation of Series One and Two, helping disciples develop the ability to accurately handle the word of God. The principles introduced topically in Series One and Two are strengthened and developed in Series Three through the study of entire books of the New Testament.

  1. Interested leading a group at my church using this series. I need to create a calendar and schedule to present my pastor. How long does it take to go through a booklet? Series?

    • An F.E.: A single booklet has six sessions and with a little discipline can be done in six weeks. You may want to make it eight weeks for an introductory discussion and to allow for good discussion. Same kind of answer regarding the series. Each of the three series can be done in 24-30 weeks, but with holidays and other things happening, maybe a break between each booklet, I think a good time frame is one year per series. May God bless your journey.
